Welcome to Valencia Polytechnic University and welcome to ACM SIGCHI ACE2005. Our University is very glad to home the second edition of this prestigious International Conference. After the successful developed in National University of Singapore last year we take know the responsibility in the organization of this event and we are ready to contribute the necessary conditions for a satisfactory develop. Computer Entertainment is a relative recent area of research, it has been growing incredible fast and become a very big and powerful business opportunity. This conference is an international referent in this area and it is a great opportunity for artists, researchers and educators around the world to meet and share knowledge. We encourage to anybody interested in the field of Art and Computer Entertainment to take active part in the ACM SIGCHI ACE2005.

Since children we discover the world through the game, with ludic and pleasant forms we communicate to each other by playing to understand and to share our environment, developing our curiosity and our understanding. Everything is mediated by systems of symbolic representation, and, for that reason, we are characterized by how we represent ourselves in our simulations, in our games, with our multiple identities and all the wished spaces. Itís good to take seriously the importance that the game and the entretainment has for the development of our ways of life today. Research in entertainment picks up this challenge. The technological devices of the computer entretainment enlarges this capacity of symbolic representation. The development of these devices, besides extending the limits of our capacity of perception and understanding the world, are overcoming their own limits that defined them in their origin. Today, the devices of computer entertainment configure a "expanded media" inside a multi-disciplinary field in continuous change. ACE2004 has consolidated as the suitable forum for the researchers and industries to present and to discuss those transformations, to know and to fortify the relationships between those different hybrid fields. It is an important and pioneering conference in computer entretainment. I want to welcome all participants in ACE2005. Valencia picks up the solid efforts carried out in the previous convocation ACE2004. From Singapore to Spain, jumping continents and cultures, the continuation of that initial effort wishes to continue opening future possibilities.

The first computer game I have ever created was "How to Solve the Rubikís Cube Puzzle" written in BASIC on the Apple II computer. You enter the cubeís initial configuration by coloring the squares and rotating the cube onscreen with simple keystrokes. The software helps you solve any scrambled Rubikís Cube in your hand.

The first CD-ROM title I have co-developed was "The Lion King Animated Storybook" for which I created a new scripting language and multimedia compiler to enable the engineers to script the interactive behaviors and games around animated objects, sound effects and music.

Those days seem like ancient history to me. Computer entertainment applications have gone through tremendous evolution and expansion. Today powerful software and computer graphics are employed in making computer games and Hollywood movies filled with special effects and 3D animation. Mobile, online, and video games alone are a $20 billion a year industry. Digital 2K/4K projectors are being installed in some cinemas. Humanoid entertainment robots are on the horizon.

ACM SIGCHI International Conference on Advances in Computer Entertainment Technology brings together stellar developers and scholars from leading universities and companies to share their hands-on experience and ideas on the present and future of entertainment technology. Welcome to the conference! Together we look forward to an exciting future of entertainment empowered by new technology.

Computers have shaped entertainment for many decades now, contributing to new forms art, performance and games. Indeed, entertainment has been one of the driving forces behind the evolution of computers as we know them today. In spite of this, only in the past few years has the research community begun to focus on entertainment computing as a major topic in its own right, one that raises its own specific research challenges.

Welcome to ACE 2005, the leading international forum dedicated to research in entertainment computing. Building on the energy and enthusiasm generated by the first ACE conference in Singapore in 2004, this year's conference promises to deepen our focus on breaking research in entertainment computing, including new technologies, applications and design frameworks and methods. I hope that you will join us in Valencia to continue the discussion. I look forward to seeing you there!
